Tractor Trade-Ins: A Win-Win for Agricultural Machinery and the Environment

To accelerate the replacement of outdated agricultural machinery, improve agricultural mechanization, and reduce environmental pollution caused by aging tractors, many regions across China have recently implemented a comprehensive "trade-in" policy for older tractors. To date, over 12,000 older tractors have been replaced, with significant improvements in operating efficiency, energy conservation, and environmental protection, achieving the dual benefits of agricultural machinery upgrades and environmental protection.

It is understood that approximately 30% of my country's existing tractors are older than 10 years old. These older tractors generally suffer from high fuel consumption, excessive emissions, poor safety performance, and low operating efficiency. Firstly, older tractors consume 15%-20% more fuel than newer tractors, resulting in an additional diesel consumption of approximately 2 million tons annually. Secondly, their exhaust emissions of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and particulate matter far exceed current standards, adversely affecting air quality. Furthermore, some older tractors lack necessary safety features, making them prone to workplace accidents. To address this issue, over 10 provinces, including Hebei, Jiangsu, Anhui, and Hunan, have introduced "trade-in" policies for older tractors this year. These policies provide farmers with special subsidies for replacing older tractors that meet the standards. Farmers who dismantle older tractors (over eight years old and meeting retirement standards) at designated recycling companies can receive a subsidy of 3,000 to 15,000 yuan when purchasing a new tractor. The specific amount depends on the new tractor's power, energy efficiency, and environmental performance. The policy also requires that the new tractor meet China IV emission standards and be equipped with advanced features such as safety protection and intelligent monitoring.

In Suzhou City, Anhui Province, farmer Zhang Jianjun used the "trade-in" policy to replace a 12-year-old tractor with a new one. "My old tractor not only burned a lot of fuel and was slow to work, but it even had a minor malfunction during last year's autumn harvest. Now that I've replaced it with a new tractor, not only has fuel consumption been significantly reduced, operating efficiency has increased by 30%, and it's also equipped with a safety warning system, which gives me greater peace of mind." Zhang Jianjun said he received an 8,000 yuan government subsidy for the replacement, allowing him to buy the new tractor for just over 50,000 yuan, significantly reducing his financial burden.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, 12,000 old tractors have been recycled and dismantled nationwide to date. The replacement tractors will reduce diesel consumption by approximately 240,000 tons, nitrogen oxide emissions by approximately 5,000 tons, and particulate matter emissions by approximately 800 tons annually. Furthermore, the widespread use of the new tractors has increased agricultural production efficiency by an average of 25%, effectively ensuring a bumper grain harvest this year.

Next, relevant departments will further expand the scope of the "old for new" policy, optimize subsidy standards, and strengthen supervision of the recycling and dismantling process of old tractors to ensure the environmentally friendly disposal of used agricultural machinery. In addition, we will increase support for the research and development of new energy-saving and environmentally friendly tractors, and promote the development of agricultural machinery and equipment towards a more efficient, environmentally friendly and intelligent direction.
