In the past, this sloping land could only be plowed by oxen and carried by people, and planting one acre of corn took three days. Now, with this small tractor, I can finish the work in half a day, and it's even more evenly planted than by hand. Tea farmer Yang Shengmei, watching a small tractor nimbly maneuver along the narrow ridges of a mountain tea plantation in Jianggu Town, Zhenyuan County, Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province, beamed with joy.

Zhenyuan County is mountainous and hilly, with most plots exceeding 15 degrees in slope. These plots are fragmented, making them difficult for large agricultural machinery to access. For a long time, local agricultural production has relied on human and animal power, resulting in low efficiency and the dilemma of "young people unwilling to farm and elderly people unable to do so." Earlier this year, local agricultural authorities, in collaboration with agricultural machinery companies, introduced a batch of small tractors with a width of less than 1.2 meters and a minimum turning radius of just 1.5 meters, tailored to the specific characteristics of mountainous terrain. They also developed supporting rotary tillers, seed drills, and tea-picking assistance devices suitable for mountain operations, enabling these small tractors to not only cultivate crops but also assist in tea garden management.

"This tractor is lightweight and powerful, capable of stable operation on slopes of less than 25 degrees, and can adjust its speed based on the size of the plot," said Wu Haibo, director of the Zhenyuan County Agricultural Technology Extension Center. To help farmers quickly master operating techniques, the local government has held five small tractor operation training courses, training over 320 farmers. They have also established an "agricultural machinery assistance team," providing on-site technicians with hands-on instruction.

At a corn planting base in Jianggu Town, agricultural machinery operator Master Wang demonstrated the operation of a small tractor. He slowly drove the tractor along the ridge of a field, using the rotary tillage device to loosen the compacted soil. Then, the seeding device precisely placed the corn seeds. The entire process was smooth, and one mu of land was sown in less than 20 minutes. "In the past, hiring people to plow and sow the land would cost over 800 yuan per mu. Now, using a tractor, including fuel, it only costs 200 yuan, which saves a lot of money over the year," said Master Wang.

To date, over 150 small tractors have been put into agricultural production in Zhenyuan County, covering grain and cash crop bases in 18 townships. It is estimated that the widespread use of small tractors has not only tripled local agricultural production efficiency but also helped farmers save over 600 yuan in labor costs per mu, effectively stimulating their enthusiasm for farming.
